Fall 2019 Practicum,īayview Glen School An excerpt from an online class I taught for a blended Grade 10 Career Studies using the “Edsby” Learning Management System. This organizational system improves student accessibility without requiring ongoing staff maintenance, meeting the unique needs of City School. My intervention was threefold: reviewing materials to remove redundant, damaged, and discriminatory materials from circulation re-shelving texts in simplified categories for logical navigation and student-centred showcases and applying simple stickers (one of four colours) to books and shelves to indicate re-shelving locations. Without a dedicated teacher librarian to maintain it, the wealth of quality resources and literature at City School’s library space was difficult for students to access. I also took on a school service project during my placement focused on the restoration of City School’s library. This culminated with a mini-inquiry project where students chose two primary sources to compare and contrast their revelations about a historical topic of interest. After assessing their initial comfort with primary sources, I demonstrated an approach for source analysis - “Origin, Purpose, Values, Limitations” - which we then practised with documents across the unit, collectively at first and later individually. I used a similar strategy in my Grade 12 World History (CHY4U) course to develop my students’ capacity to analyze primary source documents. Those sessions served as practice for the students to create media critiques using theories and texts of their choice. After reviewing various theories of social justice, we examined various book and television experts, discussing how we might analyze them through our existing lenses. This approach was exemplified in the Media Analysis unit that I created and taught for Grade 12 Equity Studies (HSE4M). As such, my lessons there were designed to leverage both the limited class sizes and the unique strengths of these students to enable student inquiry.
